Amaranth wood, is employed by its characteristic purple colour, high strength and toughness, to manufacture items that require high resistance to the use or the passage of time, be it handles of tools or knives, musical instruments, furniture, boats,...

Scientific name: Peltogyne spp., Peltogyne venous

Distribution: Central and South America (from Mexico to southern Brazil)

Tree size: 25-50 m height, trunk diameter 1-1.5 m

Tensity (Kg/m3): 1220

Colour / appearance: freshly cut is a dull grey / purple brown. After the exhibition and use of wood becomes a purple eggplant. With the passage of time is darker until it reaches a nice color shown with light pink and dark brown shades.

Grain / texture: has a medium with small pore texture. The fiber is generally straight, but can also be wavy or irregular.

Resistance: rated as very durable, resistant to rot and insect attacks most.

Machinability: can present some unique challenges, if wood is heated by some sharp tools or if cutting rates are too high, exudes a sticky resin that can obstruct the tools and complicate the process of machining by the clogging of the tools.

Odor: varies depending on the species, most species have no characteristic odor, although some species may have a pungent scent.

Allergies / toxicity: generally, the most common reactions simply include irritation of eyes and skin, because it may produce dust from other Woods. Also has reported some cases nausea for a very long day exposure to dust from the wood without mask. Does not require any special caution, except the usual working materials which emit particles.

Sustainability: this kind of wood is not included in the appendices of the CITES or on the red list of endangered species of the IUCN.

Common uses: embedded parts, floors, furniture, boat building, fancy caskets, musical instruments, tool handles.
