Description

A2 carbon steel Precision , high quality ground steel, this steel is used to make all kinds of high-end knives by professional craftsmen.

Its main characteristics:

- High wear resistance.

- High edge retention.

- Low oxidation.

- Good machinability.

- High Tenacity.

- Up to 65 HRC.

Chemical Composition (%) : C: 1.05 Cr: 5.5 Mo: 1.20 V: 0.15

This steel is not recommended for beginners, its degree of difficulty of work is Medium - High.

Supplied Annealed (soft), to facilitate work, since once tempered it is very difficult to work.

Heat treatment:

- Forging: 900 to 1100 ºC. Previous heating to 930 ºC from 10 to 20 minutes. Very slow cooling in the oven or insulating materials (sand, salts, mica).

- Normalizing: 670 to 700 ºC. To eliminate structural stresses caused by forging or roughing. Recommended time, 50-60 minutes.

- Hardening (oil) : 950 to 980 ºC. Previous heating to 790 ºC, stabilized temperature, thermal jump to tempering temperature, reached, maintain at least 1 minute per millimeter . Hardness from 58 to 64 HRC.

- Tempering : Slow heating to annealing temperature (see temperature diagram). The recommended minimum time is 1 hour . It is recommended to do it 2 times.

It is recommended to perform tempering and tempering in a conservative atmosphere, although it has low decarburization. See tempered sheet.

This is the recommended heat treatment, there are others. You can vary temperatures, times or how it is carried out, depending on your needs or experience in said process.
